Below are some interesting read about the growth of Facebook and the threat if poses to Google:
The rapid expansion and growth of Facebook is Google’s biggest long term threat. In addition, Facebook is testing its payment system aiming at monetizing it’s huge membership. The article here “Facebook’s New Payment System Off To Great Start, Could Boost Revenue By $250 Million In 2010″ points to the future direction Facebook is heading.
With 500 million users, Facebook is a real threat to Google’s dominance on the internet. Another article “The Decline of Google” high-lighted the changing online competition for consumer dominance on the net by players like Facebook and Apple.
“In the early days, email was the dominant application. Then it was portals, such as Yahoo (YHOO). Google dominated the next cycle, which was search. Now, it in turn is being brushed aside by social networking and the mobile internet”.
The observation by Eric Qualman is right-on and it is obvious that Apple is benefiting from consumers gravitating towards social networking and mobile internet.
It’s a matter of time the Facebook will be able to capitalize on its huge banner ads – Facebook Now Serving More Than 50 Billion Banner Ads Per Month. For now, Facebook has established a larger footprint than anyone else showing display ads. Facebook continues its growth to becoming the most trafficked site in the world – it is currently at number three.
